The Evolving Workscape

Presented by: John Diehl

Approved for 1 re-certification credit through HRCI and SHRM.

The Evolving Workscape Attracting and retaining talent in a world changed by innovation Imagine a workplace where the workers that are in shortest supply are the ones who understand your business, inside and out. Imagine a job market where retirees beginning second careers, especially female retirees, are a critical part of your recruitment pool. Imagine a workplace where successful recruitment and retention may rest less on what you pay than on what you provide: flexibility, access to information, personal services, and voluntary benefits. This is the workscape of tomorrow. Increased longevity and technological innovation are revolutionizing the world of work. While many are quick to recognize the changes that accompany advancing technology, such as productivity gains, destruction of legacy positions, and creation of new roles, increased longevity is often overlooked. Demographic changes have a major impact. People are living longer in our ultra-connected, high-tech world, and our workscape is changing as a result. The traditional career cycle that begins with full-time education and finishes with a full-time career, ends with a hard stop, is in its dying days.

Modern careers follow a different, more winding path that may extend into what were once considered retirement years. The result is a multigenerational workforce that offers a diverse range of experience and expertise—as well as demands. This multigenerational workscape provides unprecendented opportunity for employers—if they know how to create and cultivate it. In order to retain and attract the best talent across the generations, employers must meet the expectations of today’s employee. How? By adopting a new, flexible approach to services, benefits, technologies, and processes. If an employer can accomplish in this feat, it is possible to create a productive, thriving five-generation workplace—and gain an edge on their competitors.
